Omega 3 vs. Omega 6
Have you ever thought about what different fats do to the body? There is a lot of confusion between omega-3 oils and omega-6 oils. In America, we eat an average of a 16:1 of omega 3 to omega 6 which can cause many health issues. Generally, we should be consuming a 1:1 while not encouraging people to eat high amounts of omega 6 and matching the amount of omega 3 you consume. Generally fish oil pills are created with omega 3 with DHA and EPA. These can help offset a high omega 6 ratio. We consume a lot of omega 6 in the American diet due to consuming high intakes of corn and vegetable oils. Too much of omega 6 can cause a rise in blood pressure, which can lead to heart attacks and strokes.
Why should we consume omega 3? Remember the ratio!
- we require omega oils because our bodies don't naturally create this, it needs to be consumed
- Reduces blood triglyceride levels in obese patients
- Improve cardiovascular health
- Improve bone health
- Boost immunity
- Many fish oil pills say that they contain EPA and DHA which is very important
- EPA acts as an anti-inflammatory
- DHA helps to boost brain health
Omega 3 foods
- Salmon
- Leafy green veggies
- Flax seeds
- Walnuts...and many more
